Band: Legends of Motorsport Album: Beef and Cheese Format: CD (EP) Label: High Beam Time: 22 Minutes Year: 2002 Track list: On a Clear Night Cream Battery Hen RX7 No Sense Cover Photo: www.highbeammusic.com/ One look at the band portrait on the cover of Legends of Motorsport’s ‘Beef with Cheese,’ and you’ll agree that this is one of the most appropriately-titled EPs ever. These cats from Melbourne, Australia do one of the most scaringly – and hilariously – convincing yobbo imitations I’ve seen. If it IS an imitation………A further perusal of the CD booklet confirms what Legends are all about: muscle cars, junk food, and (partial) exhibitionism. The music takes all of this a step further in a surprisingly creative way. Their sound can be aptly described as a blend of 1970 Detroit, Jon Spenser, ? and The Mysterians, and Zen Guerilla. In other words: hard 70s garage with an insane sense of humor. Reportedly, these guys don’t have a bass, but prefer to play a downtuned guitar through a bass amp on maximum fuzz. The vocals, by one “Whispering Ken,” sound like a mix of Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Scooby Doo. The Legend’s sound is augmented by an organ that sounds fresh from a studio session with The Zombies or ? and The Mysterians, but recorded on 11 with maximum distortion. By contrast, the drums are clear and natural sounding. The above should give you an idea of how Legends of Motorsport sound: quirky, pounding, funny as fuck, weird as hell, and unique. The only exception is ‘DX7,’ which is slow, bluesy, and passionate, with female vocals by one Linda J. If you’ve been taking your music too seriously lately, or want something from the far edge of normal, dig on The Legends. Kevin McHugh

just a slight correction to your review, Kev - "Whispering Ken" plays guitar, lead singer is Andy Christ / Richard Fyshwck depending on what he's calling himself this week ;D...cool review though as usual. Saw these guys live last night in a really small room with about 30 people, and they fuckin' ROCKED LIKE MOTHERFUCKERS as they have every other time I've seen 'em

Hey, thanks for the good words, Baz. Its the kinda thing that keeps me going.
Well, my bad on "Whispering Ken." I can only plead insanity....theirs! Heh heh. With all the name changes they put themselves through, its hard to keep who does what straight. But, as always, any mistakes are my own responsibility.
Now for some Pod People....
