Cincinnati’s Jackass cultivate a sleazy b movie Las Vegas strippers n’ Jack image that’ll have you grinning from the get-go. The group’s individual names bear repeating as well: Toy on vocals and guitar, Professor on bass n’ vox, Skeeter on steel guitar, and Senator Rawk on four skins.
So I figured right off that this was a joke band. Underneath the humor, however, these guys really care about their music. The songs are concise without feeling abbreviated, with tight musicianship that includes some tasty slide and lead work. The tuneage is heavy hard rock: part stoner, part metal, part Jesus Lizard post punk, and part psyche. And this disc has some of the funniest samples you’ve ever heard.
So if you’ve hit the skids in North Vegas, the whores have disappeared, you’re on your last finger of whiskey, and the amphetamine psychosis is kicking in….just relax and put on some Jackass. After all, if you don’t have your sense of humor, you don’t have anything.
