Sweden’s Numbah Ten, with an excellent demo already under their belts, have produced another disc full of tasty groove, meat-eating riffs, and mystic hooks to turn your stoned mind to play-doh. I’m a fan of Sweden’s continuing stoner scene, and this disc does the music proud. They’ve really taken up the gauntlet thrown down by Kyuss and run just as far and as fast as they could with it.
This record starts off with a soothing, proggy, eastern-tinged tune called – appropriately enough – Spiritum Hypnoticum. Gentlemen, start your bongs! After that, the grooves come hard and fast, so thick that you feel like digging your fangs into them and shaking them like the bloody hunks of meat they are. ‘Cyberdrunk’ has some sweet wah combined with a nice, loping bassline, while ‘Maximum Brain Dysfunction’ has a killer 70s riff combined with a driving groove so heavy that you’ll NEVER pick it up without the proper chemical stimulation.
OK, so this is not anything terribly new. But you know what? I love this stuff, no apologies. That whole “Kyuss clone” thing is SO two years ago! And besides, its not true in this case. Yeah, I hear some ‘Sky Valley’ in here, along with some early QOTSA. And that’s fine with me. If you’ve heard and loved some of the newbies in the Swedish scene, such as Svarte Pan or the Goddamned, or dig stalwarts such as The Awesome Machine or Dozer, then step right up for some stoner love, Numbah Ten style.
