Band: Puny Human Album: It’s Not the Heat, It’s the Humanity Format: CD Label: Small Stone Time: 44 Minutes Year: 2003 Track List: Champagne Minivan The Toos Greasin’ the Wheel Devil’s Riff The Ox Even Now We Are Preparing to Love You Witches Chasing Cabs Bare Knuckle Love Kill You in the Face B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) Band Site and Cover Photo: www.punyhuman.com/news.htmAlthough they’ve appeared on several comps in the past couple of years, Puny Human is finally back after a 2 ½ year break since their last full-length, ‘Revenge is Easy.’ The sound is a bit smoother and the samples are gone, but they’re bringing it harder and groovier than ever with ‘It’s Not the Heat, It’s the Humanity.’
The music on this album is a perfect fit for Dave Bias’ b-movie, chix-with-gunz cover art. Hot, propulsive rhythm and psychedelic fuzz-grooves shoot this bad boy over the centerline at 100+ miles per hour and straight through the guardrail. This music combines off-kilter lyrics with a heavy, Sabbathy stoner feel and takes it south of the Mason-Dixon line, stopping off for an extra dose of Clutch Comfort and mixing in a dash of Throttlerod and 60 Watt Shaman. This is wrestling rock for the intelligent outlaw, ‘specially made for a bearded ivy league dropout with a penchant for doing whippets with Harry Crews. I’m not necessarily advocating this, but if you must Bong and Drive, I can think of few better soundtracks than ‘It’s not the Heat, It’s the Humanity.’
Kevin McHugh
