Band: Pawnshop
Record Title: Cruise ‘O’ Matic
Label: Beard Of Stars
Release Date: Out Now!
Available on Cd and Lp
As a follow-up to their successful previous release “Aloha From Saturn” Norwegian heavy-psych rock band Pawnshop have released a full-length record on the Beard Of Stars label titled “Cruise ‘O’ Matic”. ‘Blissed Out’ kicks off proceedings with a driving fuzzy rhythm guitar and larynx-shredding raw vocals that set the theme for the rest of the album that follows.
Picture yourself at the drag races surrounded by loads of kick-arse 1970’s muscle cars with extreme amounts of horsepower that is just waiting to be unleashed with a tap of the throttle! Got the image in your mind?…It is this sort of sheer power that characterises Pawnshop’s brand of fuzzed out rock ‘n’ roll!
Following the sonic blast of the two tracks that precede ‘Las Vegas’ brings the tempo down a little and allows the dust to settle. A heavy bottom end and gritty vocals mildly filtered by studio effects creates a sound that shares similarities with Australia’s own Dern Rutlidge.
‘Space Cadillacs’ heads off in a different direction with as the guitar wails with the same conviction and manic attitude that Blue Cheer is so renowned for. ‘Coma Cluster’ is as melodic as you will ever hear Pawnshop. The song drifts off on melodic tangents in between fuzzed out progressive guitar riffs.
‘Baby Bitch’ is just straight-forward rock ‘n’ roll as it should be with lots of ‘Oh Yeahs!’, tight progressive chord changes and loads of cool guitar breaks. The title track of the album is where Pawnshop’s strength lies. This track has a real ‘60’s vibe as the guitarist rips out a break that simply smokes. Amidst all the action the bassist just keeps on pumping out those heavy bass lines – yeah! <br>
‘Year of Pleasure’ is in a similar vain to the title track. The fuzzed-out guitar lines swap between left and right speakers as they shift and weave their way to the end of the track. The last track is a complete trip-out and one for the stoner fans! Pawnshop definitely plays rock as it should be played!
