I went and saw Rollerball play last night for the first time with their new line-up. Stewart (aka Junior) replaces Gav (aka Guvnor) on bass. Junior was never going to be a new Gav - no offence to Junior of course!
He has a fairly different approach to playing a bass than Gav did. No fuzzy bass anymore, just clean heavy bass lines. Overall the 'ball has really progressed away from their original desert rock/stone-core sound. They are now more a 'rock' band. Rollerball have recently referred to themselves as a "yob rock band" and I think that best describes their sound at the moment!
They belted out a few really heavy tunes paying their respect to bands like Electric Wizard. They also played a lot of their really old songs as well which they take a whole different approach to now. The vocals are now way more improvised and to state Mazie himself the band has that real lo-fi thing happening. Despite all the changes there is still that really heavy groove influence.
After hearing the 'ball last night and realising how far this band has progressed in terms of finding their own sound, I can't wait to hear their new full-length. They will be recording it in a couple of months and the Cd will be released in about September/October.

It's hard to imagine the 'Ball without the Guvnor but I'm sure his replacement is at least satisfactory. If the 'Ball lost half their groove they'd still have fuckin loads and their new stuff sounds pretty cool from your report, FGM. Cheers for the review, let's hope they make it down to Melb before the new album - I need a 'Ball fix!

That's not what I want to hear Writhe. I hope the new one keeps the 'ball groove, but it is good to see them progressing with their sound. And another thing, their Vic September tour is too far away!!

For sure the 'Ball are a different band now than they were three years ago (that is how long it has been since Lost in Space was released!!!). I think it would be worse if they hadn't progressed.
Sure their sound has changed but I don't think you should let that be any reflection on how good they are. Losing one member (i.e Gav) certainly hasn't created their sound that they have now. It has been an incremental thing that has been progressing more so over the past year or so.
Probably over the last year or so I Rollerball have really made some huge developments in terms of finding their own unique sound. I remember talking to Eddie Glass last year when Nebula were out here and even he notived a huge difference in their sound. He said something to the effect that Rollerball are doin' a different thing now - they have really got a whole different sound.
As for the album - let's wait and see and pass judgement then. Rollerball have an endless number of songs that they have not yet recorded so it should be a corker of an album in my opinion.

New album will be interesting, I liked Lost in Space a lot more than the second one so I'm thinking I won't be into the new stuff based on your review FGM but we'll wait and see. I saw Gav (ex Rollerball) at Fu Manchu and he said he had just started or was about to start a new band.

I agree with you everyone who's a little worried about their direction, especially without that fuzzy bass, but at the same time I trust Rollerball to give me good rock.
1. Are we going to get an earlier than Sept tour down south?
2. If Gav's starting another band, why isn't he in Rollerball? ? ? ? ?

Not sure what happened with Gav and Rollerball, all I know is what he said which was, he got kicked out of Rollerball and was getting something else together.
