Holy Shit! OK, first time I've been to the HiFi Bar - knew it was there but never had reason to visit. This place is fucking huge!! Needless to say, I walked in already stoned and excited and was overwhelmed when I saw the number of people there (and Forte had not even started - I was on time WOOHOO!!)
So I drank beer (do they sell anything decent that's cheap? - fuckin Tooheys) and made my way through the throng to the 'pit'. A pit, mind you, that slopes INTO the stage. Seems kinda dangerous to me?
Couple of beers and Forte came on and I was down the front (occasionally checking nervously behind me). Crazy intro and straight into the Forte that I know and love. However, the HiFi also has a crazy PA system so it was Forte X 20000Watts and with the best sound I've heard from them. I was joined by almost everyone I know - seemed like your average night at the Tote with good mates - and we proceeded to rock out and love a fine set from Forte. I still think these guys are getting stronger and their new tunes are really cool. Especially the slower moments with interesting time changes. Not a weak point apart from a dropped beer.
So Forte finished and we left to alter our headspace appropriately for FuManchu. Although from the smell we clearly needn't have bothered to leave. Came back to a sea of people that made getting anywhere near the stage very difficult. Found the bar, lost everyone, Fu started and I had a decent view, sound and space (near the bar - yess). Awesome set really - mostly new but some old. Don't remember much really other than Hell on Wheels, California Crossin', Downtown in Dogtown, Mongoose and something off Daredevil.
The crowd was nuts - heaps of crowd surfing, jumping and getting on the stage. The craziness in the 'pit' however was easily matched and beaten by the brutality of the bouncers. Anyone who made it on stage or near was thrown forcibly onto people in the 'pit'. If they were near the side of the stage they were thrown off the side of the stage to who knows where. The crowd was a worry at times (a couple of people jumping off the sides onto the crowd from a decent height) but nothing that warranted that sort of bullshit. They were clearly unprepared, over-psyched and had oversold the show.
Apparently nothing to do with this, the band played no encore so we saw no Evil Eye, Godzilla, Ojo Rojo (just wishing) or even Weird Beard. Found out later this was apparently due to someone in the band being sick and throwin up after the show. Possibly Scott Reeder cause I thought he was excellent but seemed slightly off in parts and played no solo?
All in all I thought Forte were the highlight for me - absolutley slayed! But with Fu cancelling the 'secret' show at the Tote, no encore and other negative aspects (see above rant) I thought it was a moderate let down. I've been in bigger crowds (BDO, Sepultura, Pantera, etc.) and have had a better time. Dunno, but it was good to see them again I guess.
Anyone else?
