My Friday night started off for reasons unknown to me at the recently re-branded "The Hawthorn" (previously the Governer Hotham) in - funnily enough - Hawthorn. After meeting a couple of mates and watching a guy in leather pants with perfectly groomed shiny flowing long hair get up on the Karaoke machine, whip out his air guitar and do "Sweet Child 'o Mine", I decided I really should hurry up and get to the Evelyn.
Unfortunately my housemates 'nap' lasted a little longer than expected ("No, I don't want to go yet, I'm sleeping.....fuck off.") so I missed the first two bands, .hinge and Snap To Zero, but I wasn't going to see them anyway, and I had enough time for a couple of top-ups before Cog started.
There's a reason there's so much buzz about these guys........they are fucking good. Normally I think a band is amazing then I see them a couple of times and the initial excitement wears off. I've seen Cog a few times now, and they've made me want more every time. The songs they played off the upcoming EP "Just Visiting Part II" (which they are launching at The Armadale on the 4th of October) were really good, especially "Stretch", which - if my beer laden memory serves me correctly - is about a bloke who was shot by the Police because he wouldn't pay parking fines, more or less.
They've easily got to be the tightest band in Oz at the moment - the signature change in 101 was flawless, and the extended versions of a couple of songs off "....Part I" go further towards making them a live band, but one that still translates well to recordings.
From the Chinese lanterns that are part of the light show, to the quality of their sound engineer (he was putting a small amount of delay on the drums during a quieter part of one of the new songs), and on top of that the sheer ability of Lucius to do phenomenally freaky shit on his drums, Flynn's indigenous vocal stylings, and the structure, timings, and "tricky bits" of their songs, and you've got all the ingredients for a band that should be getting a hell of a lot more exposure than they are, and one that is definitely worthy of seeing.
On another note, Mind Riot jumped on a mini-bus, got pissed and headed down to Warrnambool to play with Sydney's The Kindergarten Experiment at an empty Criterion Hotel. A fun night was had by all.
Cheers.
